“How much larger your life would be if your self could become smaller in it.”

-G.K. Chesterton

I love the moon and stars. I love being out in nature, particularly on the beach. I also love to stand atop mountains and see how small and finite I really am. I love to be overwhelmed by creation. I have seen some really incredible places thanks to my parents but I can count on one hand the number of times my breath has literally been taken away by creation. Once when I was in Alaska in Denali National Park, once when I was on the coast of California and was standing on a cliff by the ocean and once when I was in Costa Rica standing at the top of an active volcano. All three instances made me feel so inadequate and made me wonder why in the world the Lord would care for me. When people say a view is breathtaking I pray that you would know that it literally means your breath is taken away from you and I pray that you have those moments because in those moments is when we realize not only how great, big, marvelous, wonderful, etc. that our God is but it makes us realize that He cares for us even though we are so small. Despite the fact that He has created not only the earth but the heavens, too and yet he knows everything about me. He knows everything about you. He knows every single hair on our heads.

“When I consider Your heavens, the works of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained; what is man that You take thought of him, and the son of man that you care for him?”

Psalm 8:3,4

Not only did He create this beautiful earth for you and I but there are currently 7 billion people on it. To make more sense of that there are currently 318.9 million people in the U.S. alone. If those 318.9 million people stood in a single file line it would go around this earth 7 times. Wow. Let that sink in. So not only did He create the earth and the heavens but he created 7 billion people plus all the creatures. He cares for the sparrows.

“For you formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. “

Psalm 139:13

“How precious also are your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand.”

Psalm 139:17-18

He gives the stars names and He places them in the sky. He directs the lightning bolt and “hurls it at its target.” Before He formed you, He knew you. He knows when you rise up and when you lie down. He knows your thoughts and He knows the words on your tongue before they are there. So, if you’re feeling a little down and out and wondering if God is even listening to your prayers I pray that you would know that He is. That there is nowhere that you can go that His presence doesn’t go with you. I pray that you go outside today and watch the birds and the sunset and look at the night sky and then realize that He cares for you like you are literally the only person on this earth.

“All wonder and worship can only grow out of smallness.”

Ann Voskamp

I pray that you would be in wonder and worship today when you realize how small you are but that the Lord has made you great. He has called you worthy. He has called you His and He provides for the sparrows but cares for you even more.
