The man arrives at home after a day in the city. He walks into his living room, and sits down in his chair. The look on his face indicated that though his body was in the chair, his mind was clearly in another place.

His wife came in, thinking it odd that he was just sitting in silence, that he had bypassed the table of food, and barely said hello.

“Honey, how was the city? Did you meet him?”

As if just now realizing she was standing in front of him, he responded in a breath, “Yeah…I met him.”

“And?!?” She exclaimed, taking a seat in the chair next to him. “Well, what did he say? What did you say? Did you ask him what you wanted to ask him?”

“I asked him…”

“And?” She could hardly wait.

“He told me to go sell everything…”

“Wait…what? That doesn’t make sense…”

Except…it does…he thought to himself.

“He obviously didn’t mean it like that…he obviously didn’t mean for you to take that literally…”

There was no other way to take it.

She went on, “I mean, the Lord has blessed us with so much that we’ve been able to bless others with…I’m sure he just meant…well…does he know all that you do? Like how involved you are in the church? And even in this community? I’m sure if he knew all the great things you do with what the Lord’s given you, he wouldn’t have said that…”

“He knew everything…” the man interjected into his wife’s reasoning.

She paused, and looked intently at her husband, studying his face. His face was that of a man disheartened. She had never seen him like this before…it was as if he had been broken.

“Well, did he say anything else?”

“Yes…he said to give it all to the poor…” He paused, remembering the look of love on the face of the man that uttered these words, “And to come and follow him.”

“To go and follow him?” The wife repeated…”Well…what did you say? That just seems a little unrealistic…”

The man looked down at the ground, shook his head, tears welling up in his eyes…”I didn’t say anything…I didn’t…say…anything…” He paused to look at her, and in a voice not much above a whisper, admitted, “I walked away.”
