As children, we tend to either deify or vilify our parents, depending on how we are raised.
As young adults (read: young and restless) we begin to fear that we are starting to become just like these parents; flaws, strengths and all.
What if we are becoming an inferior version of them? What if we aren't as good as they are?
Or worse…
What if we are…. greater than they are?
What if we reach heights they never thought possible?
What if we reach these heights and discover that we are actually equipped to conquer them?
What if our parents actually notice?
Since I was a toddler, my parents (the good Revs. Drs. Warren and Patricia Williams) have always told us that the next generation should always dwarf the accomplishments of the last. Not in a way that hurls unneeded pressures of performance on your children, but the kind of assurance that the very ceiling of what parents do or can do becomes the floor from which The Lord kicks off the next generation.
No matter what kind of parents you had bring you into this world, God has purposed YOU for a greater inheritance than they had, whether they actually stepped into it or not.
It doesn't matter if you father was a drug dealer or a brain surgeon, you are meant for greater than he was.
It doesn't matter if your mother is a codependent pill popper or the president of a major company, you are meant for greater than she was.
It doesn't matter if your parents left you abandoned on a doorstep or if they still call you twice a day until you are 50, you are meant for greater then they are!
Catch this message because it is time that the people of our generation stop comparing ourselves to our parents failures and accomplishments, but instead take up the mantles of anointing that God has laid out for us.
We only have to pick it up and walk with it on!
We are meant for greater, bigger, brighter, and better and the most astounding thing is it has nothing to do with where you live or how much you will or won't put in your bank account.
How small do we think God's idea of greatness is?
Disclaimer: This next section is very nerdy, yet very needed
Anakin Skywalker was meant to destroy the Sith and save the galaxy. He opted out of that and joined the very people he was meant to stop. It was only when his son, Luke, stepped into his destiny that his father was able to shed the darkness of Darth Vader and fulfill his true purpose and end the reign of the Sith and set the people free.
As we walk in the things The Lord has for us, it can bring redemption to the very people we keep comparing ourselves to (our parents) by pointing them to the reason we are so different, so blessed, and so set apart and that one reason is Jesus Christ.
That reality can give them the strength to throw the addictions, the guilt, the pride, and the lack of love in their own hearts down an energy shaft as well and watch them explode as Christ restores their souls.
Star Wars is a great story.
The reality of Christ is absolutely heart-stopping.
Take a breath, take up your inheritance and see where a God of abiding love will take you when you trust Him.
