Friends, Family, and Supporters, I’m so sorry that it has taken so long for me to post another blog.
I’m not much of a writer, so it is hard for me to sit down in a coffee shop and blog instead of chat on the phone with my family.
So, I’m going to give you a summary of the ministry we have been doing for the past five weeks.
Each morning is a little chaotic (especially in the kitchen) for a good 45 minutes as everyone runs out the door to their ministry.
Some people are heading to construction where they move dirt most of the day and help put up walls to make a house a home for an amazing Guatemalan family of nine members.
Another group of women head out the door to a daycare just down the street from where we live. The kids are crazy, the classes are unorganized, and the teachers aren’t always in the classroom, but these ladies consistently go each day and have great attitudes.
Then, next door to the daycare is a cerebral palsy home where two ladies go to serve the patients there. This is the most emotionally challenging ministry because of who they are working with. They feed, bathe, and love on the patients ranging from 4-40 years old. It is challenging but very rewarding as well from what they have told us.
Then, there is a small group of four, including myself, who go to value classes. We go with Luis, our contact, and teach classes in the schools. We talk about dating, sex, morals, stealing, etc. to the kids and Luis translates for us. It has been fun and really cool to be a part of teaching them those things. Some days we will only end up teaching one or two classes because there is a parade or exams or some other event but usually we teach about six classes.
Then another group of people head out to do marketing. We are putting on a soccer tournament starting this Monday for 15-22 year olds. It will last for a month and in between each game we do some sort of skit, talk or other performance to share the gospel with the young people involved in the tournament. Organizing this tournament has been one of our most important tasks since we arrived here. They have put in a ton of work planning it, advertising it, and putting it all together so they are ready for it to start.
Lastly, on Friday afternoons we get to visit an orphanage and play with the children living there. There are young babies we get to hold and feed, toddlers we hangout with and tickle, and a little older kids who we chase around and push on the swings. It is sad to see so many children without parents to take care of them and give them a home, but I’m so thankful for this orphanage that works hard to give them a home and raise them.
So, that has been our ministry for the past 5 weeks and we are thoroughly enjoying serving the people here in Guatemala.
