Just one week ago, I boarded a plane to Lima, Peru. It seems like ages ago that I was sitting at home, hugging my family, and saying goodbye. So much has happened.
In the week, I have flown thousands of miles, slept on the floor in a Peruvian airport, ridden in 100 taxis, driven in a bus for 8 hours across a Peruvian desert, eaten both sketchy and delicious Peruvian meals, been stopped by corrupt Peruvian police, drank a”Lucuma creme” frappuccino, and found a new family amongst some of the most amazing people.
And after all that adventuring, I somehow found myself on a Peruvian rooftop talking to Jesus and marvelling at the glory of His creation.
I was overwhelmed.
How am I supposed to take all of this in?
As I soak in God’s presence, I can hear the sound of roosters crowing in my ears. I can see a black cat with yellow eyes chasing a bird on a roof. The air smells like smoke and dust and the sea. I can hear the dull roar of the waves in the distance. It is as if all of creation is breathing. I wonder at our creator and the journey he has called me to.
The rest of the day was full of endless activities, evangelism, English class, and stress. It was a test for my entire team. We fought the discouragement as our we became aware of our own weakness.
But then I remembered the soft words the Lord whispered to me on the rooftop.
“Look at the mountains I have formed in the sand. Look at the waves and patterns I make in the dirt. I taught sand to dance and oceans to be still. Never lose your wonder.”
It is easy to get caught up in the stress of the every day, but God is showing me that we can find joy in every moment.
It could be in a little girl’s smile, or in a dog’s unconditional love. It could be ice cream in a fridge or a kind word from a friend.
Every day is a gift. Every day is an opportunity for our Daddy to show us how much He loves us. Breathe in His presence. Take time to notice the small things.
Never lose your wonder.
