When we were in Costa Rica we had the opportunity to go to a squatters village in Northern Costa Rica called Medio Queso (which translates to half cheese). This area is made up of at least half Nicaraguans, as women immigrate to the area in hopes of receiving citizenship by bearing a child with a Costa Rican guy. During our time there we hung out with the kids, played soccer, got taken to jail as the kids pretended to be police officers, climbed on like we were poles, chased after, and ate.
While we played with the kids, leaders from two factions that have developed over the years in the area met with Tony and Rosa. For many years two groups have been feuding – at war for different reasons, most of which weren't discussed with us. However, leaders finally agreed to forgive each other and their long standing feud about a month or two ago. When we spent time with their kids it was the first time missionaries had come with reconciliation among the group. We did still see some disagreement between the groups, but only minor arguments. As they move forward the groups have agreed to create a body of leaders between the two groups to pursue unity and development in the name of Christ.
These are pictures from our time spent with the kids.
If you would like, Scott made a video that you should check out.

(Trying to gain some local respect with our soccer skills)

(First time the feuding groups had prayed together for reconciliation and unity)

(Jess started playing with this little girl when she got there. And she played with her until she slept in her arms)

(Their activity center – and probably church – had dirt floors with tree carved benches)

(Michael enjoyed attention. Their soccer field/out-of-season cropping field is in the background)

(I just really liked this kid)

(Beka might have been on her way to "jail" in this photo, even though she is smiling)

(Sun setting with kids continuing to climb on us)
