The Holy Spirit is our helper and teacher
John 14:26: “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
The Holy Spirit convicts us
John 16:8: “and when [the Spirit] comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.’’
The Holy Spirit is under the authority of God
John 16:13-15: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”
Blaspheming the Holy Spirit is an eternal sin
Mark 3:28-29: “Truly I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemes they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin.”
The Holy Spirit gives us power
Acts 1:8: “ But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
We receive the Holy Spirit when we receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior
Ephesians 1:13-14: “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.”
We receive Spiritual Gifts from the Spirit
1 Cor. 12:4-7: Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”
Growing up the Holy Spirit was always a mystery to me. Even today I still don’t completely understand it. Reading through these verses has helped me understand a lot more who the Holy Spirit is and what his role is in the trinity.
A few years ago is one time in my life when I could sense the Holy Spirit speaking to me. I was working on a dairy farm, making money, and life was good. Accept I could feel the Spirit pulling me in another direction. I prayed about it for a long time and eventually I ended up working in Costa Rica as short-term missionary.
During my time in Costa Rica was the first time I felt the Spirit telling me to go on the World Race. Two and half years later here I am nearing the end of month 2.
I’ve also learned a lot about how the Holy Spirit works in our everyday lives. The Spirit will be there to guide us in any situation if we allow him to. He will guide us in our conversations, in reading and understanding scripture, he will convict us of sin, and much more. I’ve heard countless stories since I’ve been on the race of people being filled with the Spirit and amazing things happening as a result because they allowed God to be in control.
The Holy Spirit will speak to us in a variety of ways as well and each person may hear from the Spirit differently. It is our job to be open and always listening and seeking what it is that God, through His Spirit is trying to communicate to us. So I encourage you to allow God the Spirit, our helper, to be in control of your life. If we want to glorify God in everything we do, this is the only way to live.
