If you know me very well, you know that my favorite movie is Facing the Giants.  At the end of the movie, the team has a chance to kick a game-winning field goal, but it’s from ridiculously far away.  From this distance, trying a field goal really may not be the best option.  The coach decides to try it anyway, and when his assistant asks what in the world he’s doing, he says “I’m preparing for rain”.

A football game might be a pretty shallow (ok, possibly cheesy too) application, but I think this example provides a really good picture of how the combination of faith and actions is to be lived out.  The second half of James 2 speaks pretty clearly on faith, action, and how they fit together.

I leave for training camp tomorrow, and I’ve been thinking quite a bit about this lately.  I want to go into this trip ready to see God work in great ways.  So what actions do I need to be taking to really step out and expect the Lord to move?

Some of my actions aren’t really that much of a choice….like living with less stuff (my pack is only so big!) or learning to love sleeping in a tent every night.  But some are….will I choose to embrace the differences of the individuals in the group I’m about to become a part of, or will just sit back and be upset that they’re not all engineers? 🙂  Will I decide ahead of time what the spiritual outcomes of this trip will be in my life, or will I choose to let that go and be open to what HE wants to do?

I find I’m most comfortable when I’m surrounded by fellow engineers, and when I have a clear picture of what’s next in my future.  That has been my life for the last 5 years – but that’s all about to change! Bring it on!

P.S.

Some of you know me pretty well.  I’d love to hear what areas you think I should be taking action in, and stepping out in faith.

Prayer Request: My thesis defense is scheduled for June 30th……and to do one of those, you’re supposed to have a completed thesis…..

Praise: Bravo to Brian and Gary for stepping into leadership for next year of IVGG, the InterVarsity Graduate Group we started this year.  It was great to see how God used it this year, and can’t wait to hear about it next year!
