This month we had a lot less than most months. It was pretty tough for me. The heat was a shocker. I’m still not sure I’ve stopped sweating since I walked out of the airport in the beginning of the month.
We starting out doing a VBS in Chepo, Panama where I met this boy who was the complete opposite of me. He was rambunctious and full of energy. Yet for some reason we just connected. While playing a game, he decided it would be better to partner with me and run and jump on me haha. I decided he looked exactly like Mogli from the jungle book. My host, who overheard my conversation, then told me that it was his nickname haha!
So that’s where the title of this post came from.
For most of the month we were in the jungle in the Darien gap where we worked with an awesome ministry.
Their vision is to make disciples out of children. This seemed crazy at first. But I soon realized how genius it was. Children there experience temptation in the real world at a young age…so the mission is to reach them and teach them about Christ long before they get to this point.
There were about 12 kids in the ministry. Each day we would help them with their homework, act out a bible story, eat lunch with them and play jump rope.
After about a week of this we went further in to the village to put on a children’s program. These kids were there and it was amazing to see how different they acted and how well behaved they were compared to the rest who weren’t in the discipleship program. It was truly a confirmation to the ministry’s vision of making disciples and allowing them to be an example to their school and their friends.
It was a hard month going through it…but at the same time…one of those months you look back on and are so proud of yourself for making it through. It was my first month as a squad leader and I learned so much being on my own. Sometimes it just takes a little bit of nothing to learn a whole lot of something. “Look for the bare necessities.”
