I don’t write much poetry, and I share even less, but I thought this was a cool image of Jerusalem. I hope you like it. It’s a chiasm, a form of ancient poetry the writers of the Old Testament used a lot. The idea is that one part of the poem is the same, but different, as another part in the poem, forming different structures. Usually there is a piece of the chiasm in the middle or at the end that is the central point of the poem. See if you can figure out how this one is structured.
Jerusalem Rocket Ship
An ancient stone obelisk explodes to
heaven
Firing down Orange the shape of a
paintbrush
A Roman Candle flying to the stars
It will explode
High above the earth
A man in a blue robe clings on,
Ear lochs trailing, a religious
rocketman.
One-hundred and fifty miles up
It detonates
Sending a shower of sparkly shooting
stars
Painting ancient mysticism on the sky
Above an obelisked city dreaming of
God.
