So the C Squad Racers decided as a final squad experience to all get screened for parasites.  It’s only a few dollars here to get “tested” so today the group is busy turning in their “samples” and getting their results.

For those of you that don’t know, parasites are incredibly easy to get in third world countries.  They can reside in unpurified water, on/in raw vegetables and fruit and some other miscellaneous ways.  They reside in the intestines and cause a littany of various side effects not the least of which is diarrhea.  There are a few varieties of parasites, one common one is known as Giardasis (“giardia”).

Now if you’re wondering why I put “tested” and “samples” in quotes….your worst fears are absolutely accurate: stool samples are the best way to determine if and what kind of parasites you might have.  Pharmacies might give you a little cup (no larger than a film canister) and request a “sample” to “test.”

Yes, it’s that gross.

So I left the World Race in November of 2007.  I had a great check up with my doctor, clean bill of health, no symptoms.  A couple months later, I noticed stomach aches and some “irregularities.”  (For those that know me well, can you tell I’ve grown?)

So since I was in Guatemala, and since everyone else was doing it, I figured why not…

I have giardia and an intestinal infection.  Nothing 4 little pills won’t solve.

So welcome to my little adventure.
