While staying at Agape in Action, we have been sleeping in tents. I have really enjoyed this experience—the tent creates a little, comfy personal space. There has been flooding of tents and takeovers by ants; but those seemed minor in comparison of what happened this morning.
As I went to grab my toiletry bag this morning, I noticed antennas sticking out of my large pack. I slowly counted too three before looking—Gasp. Scream. A giant black insect jumped right at me. I jump back, throwing a packing cube in its direction- another scream. I hear a voice from the tent next to me if I’m ok and a wearily say “giant bug…” After a few failed attempt at catching it with my hands, shooing it out and considering just giving over my tent to him; I left with a new plan.
I grabbed two mugs in hope of catching him in it. When I returned to the tent, I swear he doubled in size. Legs and antennas walking all over my stuff. More attempts to catch him. More screaming. Encouraging cheers from the tent over. This went on for a few minutes—more packing cubes flying. Finally, I left again, gave in, and asked my teammate Nic for help.
Feeling slightly ashamed for having to ask for help, we walked over to my tent. As I moved a bag to find the creature again, it jumped right into my cup. Dumb cricket.
Just another morning on the Race!
