It is impossible to go on the World Race and not begin to see the world, and your teammates through a different lens. I have learned that beauty is about perception, not about clothes, hairdos, or make-up. It is about not only accepting people for who they are, but truly believing that the God of the universe designed them exactly as he wanted them to be.
Beauty is your teammate deciding to forgo make-up for three months and watching her come alive with a new sense of freedom.
Beauty is a two-year-old girl, who has spilled food and water all over herself, being held by a missionary who loves her in spite of it.
Beauty is not showering for almost a week in Mozambique, because there isn’t enough water to shower and cook the food.
Beauty is having dirt under your fingernails after 10 hours of planting corn in a hot field.
Beauty is your teammates telling you when there is something in your teeth or when your pimple is ready to pop, because you never have access to a mirror.
Beauty is being ok with the fact that you have gone up a pants size since being in Africa.
Beauty is you teammate telling you that you look great…when you haven’t changed your clothes in three days.
Beauty is knowing that you only have one person to impress… and the God of the Universe doesn’t care what’s in style.
Beauty is sitting on the back porch with several teammates as they take scissors to their own hair. They now understand that no one cares if their hair is perfectly cut and layered.
Beauty is not having any hair at all.
This month, I have been blessed by an incredible group of Swazi girls. The word fashion isn’t in their vocabulary, they are often covered in food and dirt, shaved bald, and they are beautiful!
