So to make a long story short, we are doing ministry in London instead of Swaziland this month. Because of the protesting and rioting at the Bangkok airport, our flight had been delayed over a week and they weren’t exactly sure when they would be able to get ALL 32 of us on a flight to Johannesburg. BUT they did have plenty of flights to London….so here we are! I stepped off the plane in my linen pants and flip flops(the warmest clothes I owned) and almost froze right then. We have all since accumulated warm clothes from thrift stores and pretty much look like bag ladies every day but AT LEAST we are warm!
Everything has just fallen into place since we arrived here. The YWAM(
http://www.ywamharpenden.org/) base here which normally costs $42 a night for food and lodging (London ain’t cheap folks!) GRACIOUSLY let us stay at their base for three nights free of charge because they heard about our situation and wanted to help us out. During those three days, we were able to find a ministry that our WHOLE squad could participate in which is a HUGE blessing to all be together during the holidays and especially since it was all so last minute.
We
are doing city outreaches everyday and encouraging a local ministry
here. We are currently going
through training in order to help with this church’s evangelism
efforts. Next week we will move into three different churches to help with more intense evangelism
within the city. The Christmas season helps open up many conversations
about Jesus! We are not able to give out too many specifics because we have to protect the ministry and the people working here, but it should be a really good and stretching month for us all!
I created a list below about some of the differences and culture shock we have been experiencing since being back in a 1st world country:
You KNOW you are no longer in a third world country when….
-you walk into a grocery store and there are actually foods you recognize
-the transportation you take actually has seat belts
-get this…people SPEAK ENGLISH!!!
-people here actually have enough money to buy food and clothes
-hot showers and hair dryers have been re-introduced into my life
-meals cost A LOT more than my $1 rice bowls in Asia
-people don’t stare, point, and laugh at you because we ACTUALLY look normal here
-rice is not a staple food item
-there is toilet seats and TOILET PAPER in the restrooms
