I fell in love with the sweetest old woman in Romania and never even knew her name! She lived across the street from us in Viile Tecci and her 10 year old grandson, Gigi would always invite people over to play with him. I finally gave in one day and am glad I did.because I had a blast. I kicked the soccerball around with him, got pulled on a wagon, sang songs, and watched American cartoons dubbed in Romanian…what could be better!
Well, I’ll tell you what could be better…getting loved on by that dear old grandmother! She didn’t speak a lick of English and I of course speak no Romanian, so we weren’t able to have conversations, but we connected none the less. She of course, in typical grandmotherly fashion, gave me food and lots of it. Even when I had just eaten lunch and told her no, she insisted and kept putting it in front of me. She always wanted to make sure I was comfortable and not wearing myself out with Gigi. She kept motioning for me to take a nap on her bed, or bringing a chair for me to sit on. She was so kind and generous, it warmed my heart (and made me homesick for my own grandmothers at the same time!)
I don’t know how much my visiting with her affected her, but she always had a smile on her face and teared up a little when our big bus pulled up on the street and I ran across the road to say good-bye. I was finally able to get a translator to help me say my goodbyes and she kept saying, “God bless you!” That is what I hope God does for her and her husband and grandson…blesses them and keeps on giving them joy!
