[…continued from part 1, love me.]

As I was processing through my new realization about love, I began to see how it applied to humanity as a whole, not just to the Filipino children. We encounter so many broken people each day. We pass their desks in the office, we wait in line beside them in coffee shops, & we cut them off in traffic. We co-exist with vast amounts of people; yet, often pay them no attention. We somehow don’t see the value in extending ourselves to people who, on the surface, appear to offer little to no benefit to us. There are times when you can feel the sadness in the despondent eyes of a stranger or sense a burdened heart by their heavy countenance; yet, we do nothing. We often feel no obligation to these strangers, as we assume that there is certainly someone else, in a more rightful position, to build them up or show them love. But what happens when that assumption is false? What happens when we fail to show someone love & as result, they go unloved?

Don’t fall victim to The Good Samaritan effect. Don’t assume someone else is going to pick up your slack. Live like you are the only person capable of love, as if love didn’t exist outside of you. If you knew that responsibility lay in your hands, wouldn’t you certainly be more likely to smile at the downtrodden stranger, or let the frantic business women cut ahead of you in the grocery line. If you knew that the perpetuation of love fell on you then wouldn’t a hug or an extra few minutes of your time seem less like an inconvenience & more like an opportunity? Therefore, this is my challenge. Next time you are presented with a choice to demonstrate love to someone, no matter how seemingly insignificant it may be, chose to love because you may be the only one doing so. Can you imagine what the world would look like if we all loved like we were the only ones capable? That would be a heck of a lot of love, because thankfully the reality is that we are all blessed with the ability to love & in turn it’s what we are called to do.

Jesus clearly laid out the way to eternal life when he said in Luke 10:27:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart & with all your strength & with all your mind & Love your neighbor as yourself.”

So come on & love. Don’t let an opportunity pass you by, because you never know if you are somebody’s only chance for a goodnight hug & kiss.
