For Thanksgiving dinner, we all decided that the next best
thing to Thanksgiving food would be Mexican food. So we got ready and made our
way out to the taxi. We ended up getting slightly lost on the way, but soon we
arrived at Mike’s Mexican Restaurant and to one of the most refreshing,
delicious meals of my entire life!
As we walked in, we were greeted with the amazing smells of
salsa, fajitas and queso! We were seated in the nearly empty restaurant and
greeted by our server. She brought out jalapeno poppers…REAL jalapeno
poppers…full of sliced jalapenos and topped with a cream cheese sauce.
Amazing!! We started out our Thanksgiving feast with chips and salsa and I
ordered my long awaited Margarita! I’m definitely not a drinker, but when
presented with an opportunity to have a genuine Mexican margarita in Thailand,
I jumped at it.
They had every kind of Mexican dish on the menu, but I
settled with cheese enchiladas. Almost all of my teammates ordered burritos.
When the food came out, we were blown away by the portion sizes. No joke, the
burritos were about as big as my leg!
We took tons of pictures and thoroughly enjoyed every bite
of our Thai Mexican Thanksgiving dinner! After dinner, I sat down with our
translator, Mon, and she helped me figure out my next tattoo. One of my
teammates and I decided to leave straight from Mike’s and go get our tattoos.
We found ourselves on Walking Street. My teammate had opted
to get “purity” and I planned to get “a voice calling out” (I’m sure I’ll
explain the meaning, but I’ll leave that for another blog). Out of all the
places to get a tattoo, we found ourselves on the most heavily populated street
of prostitutes in the world getting two phrases that would never be found there
otherwise. We walked down the street looking for the best, cleanest tattoo
parlor and ended up settling on a 2nd floor parlor across from a
European Gentlemen’s Club (one that we’ve been drawn to pray about since we
arrived here). My teammate went first and got inked with “purity.” While she
was in the chair, I decided on the design of mine and was ready to go until the
tattoo artist told me that she needed to nearly double my price.
I ended up walking away without the tattoo, but ending the
night knowing that I had just experienced one of the best, most random
Thanksgivings in my life. One of answered prayers, afforded by 2 homosexual
German men (1 of which was cheating on his wife to come here and meet with his
partner….God really does use anyone for His purposes, even if they don’t
realize it!), making a towel bear with Mentos eyes, listening to Kenny G,
experiencing falling leaves in our hotel room, eating a massive Mexican feast
in a little restaurant hidden in the middle of Pattaya, and ending the night on
Walking Street, on the 2nd floor of “House of Pain” tattoo parlor,
across from a European Gentlemen’s Club with my teammate getting a tattoo of “purity”
on her wrist in the midst of brothels and prostitutes in every direction.
This will be a Thanksgiving I will never forget!
But this was only the first day of God really showing off
for us! On Friday, we had an audition in a bar on Walking Street…10 pm…perfect
time for people to hear the gospel…that blog will be up soon. Stay tuned to hear how God showed off on the
darkest street in the world!
