Am I just speaking for the sake of speaking?
I don’t know when it actually happens, but at certain times in a Christian’s life, certain words become part of the verbal identity of Christians. Do you remember the song, They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love? Sometimes I feel the need to spew off certain “Christian” words to reveal my identity of being a “good Christian”. They will know we are Christians if we say… “You are in my prayers”, “God be with you”, “Blessed”, etc… you know the list.
But enough with the script! Do we speak for the sake of speaking? Are they just words or are there actions and love behind them? What is really behind those words as they roll off our tongues? Is there truly a heart that beats for God? Is there that divine love and compassion that overwhelms us? Or do we hide behind these phrases, putting up the front that we are sharing the Love God asks us to share, to speak.
I wonder if I have ever really listened to what God is really asking me to speak. And yet, out of timidity, I seem to continually shrink back to the usual phrases. But whether what He fills me with to share is something difficult to speak or not, it is Truth. And shouldn’t that be what is spoken?
Psalm 1:2 – But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. As I read this scripture, it was the focus, the meditation day and night that reached me. There is such devotion here. And how can one be confused on what to speak when there is such focus on God. So I strive to sit in silence today to draw on Him and only speak Truth. Because let’s be honest, the words that we speak are not to bring us glory, but to bring glory and honor to HIM.
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to HIM.
