You have nowhere to go, nothing to eat, nothing to do.
All you have left is whatever faith you had, or have!
This sets the scene for what Haiti just experienced. A Nation that was already broken, feeling despair, poor and captive. They were
still dealing with the aftermath of the severe hurricanes that took place a few years ago. In the midst of it all, they stand rejoicing, singing praises to God, thanking Him for their protection and freedom.
A Nation that’s poor and captive, yet rich in faith. Then there’s us – A Continent that’s rich and free, yet poor in faith. I’m not saying we don’t believe in God, but the belief we have, we tend to waver rather than act on it or proclaim it. Why is it so difficult to taste faith in the land of freedom? A place where we have “everything” at our fingertips? A place where materialism, consumerism and self reign, and the spirit becomes an add on, rather than our life. How is it that those that live in places of persecution and poverty become more hungry and thirsty for God and deepen there faith so much easier than us?
It doesn’t seem to make sense – yet it does! We find “what we need”
in everything else, or so we think, so we rely on what fades away, when those in places around the world have nothing BUT Christ to lean on.
During Christmas, I met with family friends who are missionaries in China. They said something that I witnessed this past year…why do we continually pray against persecution when it’s the persecution keeping the church alive? Our circumstances either drive us towards or away from the cross…the tests and trials in our lives become a part of us, and challenge us in our faith.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn,
and provide for those who grieve in Zion- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.
They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated;
Does God do things to get our attention? Does he stir things up to make us believe? Does he make beauty from the ashes?
This earthquake was an answer to the prayers of many Haitian pastors. I know what you’re thinking…who prays for an earthquake, death, disease, fear, devastation etc. These Haitian pastors and believers have been praying that God would do something to shake their Nation. They had been praying for a revival. Praying for the Nation as they know it to turn from their evil ways and be a different Nation than the poverty and oppression and corupt government that was ruling their Nation. They have been praying for months now for this Nation to be changed.
Physically, this Nation was damaged. Destroyed. Devastated. It’s what our eyes could see…not only being there walking the ground, but on the news, through pictures etc. It’s what happened! However, for me, and the team God placed me with, along with those that believe in Christ, there’s more to the story. There’s also the spiritual side. A part that eyes cannot see.
Physically – Haiti was destroyed.
Spiritually – Haiti has been resurrected!
This Nation has come together. They spent three days last weekend fasting and praying for their Nation – a call to order by their president. They are working together to clean-up the city.
What is it we need to do to shake things up in our church? In our community? In our province (state)? In our Country? God’s presence is here, yet we tend to ignore it. Let’s get on our knees. Let us give, and love, and serve with Jesus in mind. Let us start putting God and others before ourselves.
Start small, but dream big! God is the God of the impossible! He hears our cries and our prayers.
He loves and cares for His children. He wants what’s best for us, even when it comes at a cost and we don’t understand it all. What is mine here on earth is only what God has blessed me with. I do
not own anything. Haitians are living it out. We can learn from them.
Rejoice in our sufferings.
because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.
Have they all turned towards the Lord? Are they all rejoicing? No and No…however, the countless stories and testimonies myself and others I was with experienced, gives us all hope for a better future for this Nation! God is moving. He is at work. Their faith has been mobilized – has yours!?
