“God, why do you let this happen? Why don’t you put a stop to it?”
The infamous question. It’s no secret that there’s injustice in the world. There’s pain, there’s suffering, there’s abuse, there’s slavery, there’s hunger, there’s poverty, and the list keeps going. A question I’m asked frequently, and have even myself asked before, is God, why don’t you just stop it?
I recently heard a song by Matthew West for the first time called “Do Something”. The first few lines go “Well, I just couldn’t bear the thought of people living in poverty, Children sold into slavery. The thought disgusted me, So, I shook my fist at Heaven Said, “God, why don’t You do something?” He said, “I did, I created you.”
That hit me like a ton of bricks. If not us, then who? If not now, then when? Everyone has a passion- a cause that when they think about it just makes their heart hurt. God gives you those feelings for a reason, because he wants you to do something about them.
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” Matthew 25:40
For me right now, it’s human sex trafficking. This growing industry seems like an impossible problem to deal with. There’s currently 27 million people enslaved around the world. That’s more slaves than at any other point in our history. So where do you start? Get educated. Spread awareness. That’s where it’s going to begin. So tomorrow, I will be participating in the “End It” Movement. February 27th is Shine a Light on Slavery Day, where participants will be drawing a red X on their hands to show that slavery still exists and that they will not tolerate it. So, to answer the question of why you’re going to dislike me after reading this, it’s because now you have to do something. Why? Because you’re a human being, and there’s injustice in the world. As soon as I started listing causes, one popped into your head. Don’t ignore it! That cause, whatever it may be, needs you. Whether it’s animal abuse, slavery, genocide, world hunger, you can make a difference. God has laid it on you heart to do something; it’s not a mistake. That thought is there for a reason, I promise. Will you do something? These problems are not going to go away, and you cannot ask God why he doesn’t stop it, because he did do something. He created you. And it’s time for us to do something.
