I am so sorry about the lateness of this post as it is the end of month 2 before I was able to post this…
This is how the rest of the month in Costa Rica went. I last left off with the promise of the story of Talamanca and Puerto Viejo.
My team and I spent 4 days in a remote indigenous village in the Talamanca Province of Costa Rica. We were about 2 miles from the boarder of Panama. It took roughly 4 hours to drive there from our house in San Bosco. Gama, our driver, turned out to be a son of the man and woman we were going to be staying with. He also was an English teacher at the high school in the village. Part of our ministry there was to help him prepare his class for a spelling bee next month. We made flash cards (all of the words were in English…) and took turns going to the school with him to help with pronunciation and spelling. Those not at the school stayed back at our host’s (Berta and Moya’s) house. We taught some women from the village how to bake pizza dough and a very simple bread recipe.
One day, while the other girls on my team and I stayed back with Berta, she began to share her story with us. I was designated as translator (as Berta speaks no English) and only caught about 70% of what she said, but I could tell that she absolutely knows Christ. She has the most faith of anyone I have ever met. She has had a lot of really bad things happen in her life from losing children, her mother, and even her husband to struggling to raise a family from a young age. The full story is coming soon via my good friend/teammate Marsha’s blog (marshhubb.theworldrace.org) so stay tuned.
After the village, my team and I spent two days in the beach town of Puerto Viejo for a mini vacation of sorts. The girls went zip lining and the guys rented bikes and explored the many beaches around town. It was a great get away, but we were ready to get back “home”.
We spent the last 11 days teaching English, painting a school, and pouring into our hosts/neighbors. They made us an amazing meal on one of our last days in town complete with cake and ice cream. We felt so loved and they made it that much harder to say goodbye. I can tell you already that saying goodbye to our hosts and friends we make will be one of the hardest things about this trip and it will just keep getting harder.
Keep praying for my squad and for our fearless leaders as we continue this adventure!!
