Hope you guys enjoy this excerpt from one of my law school admission essays:

Her head leaning gently upon my arm, her voice quivering softly, accompanied by that peculiar blend of hope and fear, which nine-year-old girls seem to have solely mastered, if not to solely possess, she whispered into the silence, “Jeffrey, when will you return to Romania?”

“Soon, Rebecca.”

For my sake, more than hers, I held myself to that simple reply – for it is in moments such as this that we are betrayed, each word being but a step upon the road to tears, and all that we speak being but that we may cry. Yet Rebecca is not alone, for she is just one of many – friends, those once-strangers and almost-family – in whose company I have briefly rested, pausing just long enough to truly love, leaving too late to ever wholly escape.

Each has been a trap, whose sting I suffered with a smile.
