I confessed to you that most of my life I’ve been an anorexic Christian.  But I must confess that being an anorexic Christian isn’t the worst of it.  For the past few years I’ve moved from being anorexic to being bulimic.  Webster defines bulimia as “a serious eating disorder that occurs chiefly in
females, is characterized by compulsive overeating usually followed by
self-induced vomiting or laxative or diuretic abuse, and is often
accompanied by guilt and depression”.

A physically bulimic person will binge eat, then remove the food without benefiting from the nutrients.  As a Christian, I have been on a few binges for Christ.  Whether it be church camp, a retreat, bible study or even a Sunday morning service.  Bingeing for Christ is good right?  Only if you actually hear the word (and digest it).  If you don’t digest the word you can’t get the nutrients needed to sustain growth in Christ.  But I believe it’s even more then that.  You must APPLY the word.  If you only hear the word but don’t apply it you are a bulimic Christian.  Bingeing and purging – constant reading and hearing the word without spiritual application.

I’m tired of being a bulimic Christian.  I want to go from ignorance to knowledge to obedience.  Because it’s in the obedience where God calls us to live.

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.  Do what it says.  Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.  But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it – he will be blessed in what he does.”  James 1:22-25
