“When the city sleeps, the Spirit is still active.”
As this race has progressed with each new month, I’ve developed a love and a passion for one of the most hidden gems the world has still yet to fully discover. If you have ever done it you will know exactly what I mean. So do you know what I’m talking about yet?
I am talking about the times where I have felt the closest to God since being on the race, the times where the only thing seperating you and Heaven is the vast expanse of a night sky above. I am talking about the glorious encounters of Rooftop Worship!
Every country we have been to I have been able to find a roof that sits a few stories above the city streets: our low-budget hotel in the Philippines, the restuarant we lived above in Malaysia, and on top of the YWAM bases we got to stay at in Thailand and Cambodia. At night the rooftop has become a sanctuary for me, where the only distraction between me and God is gazing at the stars landscaped across the sky. And then I just press play on the iPod to worship my creator, or I sit in silence and contemplate the mysteries of God.
The rooftop has found me in a posture on my knees, on my back, or just dancing around thinking no one could hear or see me. It has also been a place where my heart screams with brokenness and intercession over cities who are asleep both in the natural and the spiritual. However, when the city sleeps, the Spirit is still active. He is still awake and moving to break down strongholds and to breakthrough into people’s lives.
One night where this was so evident was our last night in Siem Reap, Cambodia, where our entire squad worshiped together on the rooftop of the guesthouse we were staying at. It was a night where people were vulnerable, open, and hungry for the Spirit to move. There was one song that seemed to knit our hearts closer together with one another and also closer with God. The song, “How He Loves”, reminded us that despite our pain, our past, or our sin, we still have a Loving Abba who wraps us up in His grace, love, and mercy.
He is the God who “is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. (He) is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.” (Psalms 145:8-9). So rest in His love, find joy in His love, and know that His love is what sustains us.
