The first time we went to the jungle in Malaysia, we stayed in a house that was kind of in the middle of nowhere. It was a pretty nice place – despite the fact that we had no clue where we were. The first night we stayed in this place was a little awkward, especially at night, but we carried on as normal – we had dinner as a team and then ended our evening with some healthy feedback. After feedback and right before we went to bed Cassie mentioned having this weird feeling about where we were staying – almost like an unsafe feeling. And since we were the only ones staying in the house, in the middle of nowhere, we agreed we should probably pray about it and just ask the Lord for protection over the house. After the prayer we dispersed – the girls went into their room for the night and JD and I went through the glass doors that separated the living room from the kitchen, where we would find a mattress on the floor in the middle of the room.
I woke up about an hour before my alarm was set to go off and light was just starting to come in through the windows of the house. I slowly sat up and looked through the glass doors toward the girls room, just checking to see if any of them were awake and moving yet. (Sometimes some of us would wake up a little earlier to get some God time in and to read their Bibles and pray before getting ready for ministry.) As I looked, through the glass door and sitting outside the girls room I noticed, what seemed like a person with long blonde hair, which was shimmering in the sun – causing an illuminating effect that seemed to block out any detail of the face. The person/thing and the chair that was being used were nowhere close to the table and the remaining chairs. This person/thing was sitting in a somewhat awkward position, almost as if they were guarding the room. However, this person had their head down as if they were praying or reading something. I just remember immediately thinking it was Amber – probably because she is the only one with blonde hair on our team. And I just figured she had gotten up early to read her Bible before the rest of us got up to disturb her. I didn’t really think too much about of it and promptly laid back down to get a little extra sleep.
When I awoke the next time, I looked in the same direction and the chair and the person were both gone. Not long after I awoke this time, I saw the girls start to file out and head to the table to eat breakfast. I got up as well and walked in to greet them. When Amber came out I immediately began asking her about being up so early and sitting outside her door reading. Obviously confused, she explained that she just woke up and had no idea what I was talking about. The look of confusion quickly slipped from her face to mine. I just began thinking, I know I’m not blind, I know I was awake, and I know I wasn’t hallucinating. Though I couldn’t explain what it was that I saw and I had no proof to back me up. Even though we were the only people staying in that house and no one was up at that time, I kind of just put it behind me as I didn’t want to think about it anymore and it just sounded weird. Not soon after, I was reminded of our prayer from the night before. We prayed for protection.
So was that an angel that God sent down to protect the girls/us? I mean it didn’t have wings, at least that I could see, and I didn’t look at it long enough to really be able to describe it. As weird as it may seem, that’s what my team and I are choosing to believe….
