I’ve been a dreamer for as long as I can remember. I’d dream about things like owning my own smoothie shop, writing my own book, and learning to swing dance someday. However,” a dream remains just a dream if one lacks discipline.” These are the words God spoke to me just last week. He showed me how I have all these awesome ideas, but no discipline to execute them. To be honest, I’ve always struggled with sticking to things. I’m the type of person who starts things, but leaves them unfinished. I learned to play the piano when I was eleven years old, stop taking lessons, picked them up again, stop taking them again, and now only remember certain chords. Imagine if I had stuck to it and still playing? Imagine the potential of how good I could have been by now? Or how about the amount of times I started writing a book, but let myself get distracted by other things. I could have written perhaps more than one book by now.
I shared this with my team last week. For those of you who don’t know, I have a new team now. Every few months we go through team changes in order to help each other grow. Let me tell you a little bit about them. I’m on a team full of visionaries! Not only that, they are women who not only have big dreams for their lives, but actually make those dreams happen. I asked them what their secret is in sticking to their plans, and they all had the same answer, “I just do it.” I literally just stared at them with wide eyes and asked, “That’s it?” They simply nodded.
For example, one of my teammates, Shannon, briefly mentioned to us how she wants to learn to play the guitar. I’m thinking, oh she probably means when she goes back home from the race. Uh no, she meant more like ASAP. The next day we passed by a music store, she went in and came out with a guitar. Ever since then she’s been practicing alongside Maria (one of my other teammates who already plays guitar) or by herself using an app on her phone.
Dreaming up an idea is the easy part, but sticking to it is when it gets hard. However, if you just do it, and stick to it, then eventually you will see it come to pass. All you need is the discipline. Some dreams are of course are easier said than done, but think of it this way, every day you keep working towards it, you are one step closer to making to it, than you were the day before.
Now the question is, what have you been dreaming about? What can you not stop day dreaming of? What is holding you back?
Surround yourself with people who will speak life into your dream, even if it sounds crazy. People who will encourage you and hold you accountable until it happens. Let’s be more than just dreamers, but dream chasers and remember, Just Do It, like Nike.
