DO: TAKE MY ADVICE & SAVE SOME MONEY!
DON’T:
The World Race is not an excuse to shop at REI or wear Chacos and quick dry gear for an entire year. First off, that stuff is expensive. Second, if you choose this route and aren’t used to clothing like this, you’ll quickly feel like a hiker or more likely, a man. Keep in mind that every race is different but for the most part, you aren’t hiking and doing hard-core, manual labor eight hours a day. Ultimately, stick to what you do and know best!
If you have a sister, I’m guessing you borrow accessories and clothes from her. Right? Well, your squad is your family for the year and EVERYONE borrows from everyone. If I want to wear a scarf, I literally have thirty to choose from! Pink cable, tribal prints, solids… You name it I-Squad women have it! (Jillian is my go person for accessories!)

BUY EVERYTHING YOU “THINK”
YOU’LL NEED BEFORE LAUNCH
You can shop along the way. Don’t feel like you need to buy clothes for the entire year before you launch. THIS WILL SAVE YOU A LOT OF MONEY and a lot of space in your bag! You’ll have PLENTY of shopping opportunities. H&M exists in most countries – I’ve spied one in the Philippines and Romania. India and China also have amazing markets and best of all, THEY ARE SO CHEAP! They’ll be things there, that if you bought in the States, would cost 20 times the price!

Bangles at an Indian market.
… Unless you want to shop at Mr. Price! The southern parts of Africa are also a lot chillier than I thought. (Yes, I pictured all of Africa to be like The Lion King, basically a hot, desert. It’s not!) Month one through three, I-Squad was in South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Swaziland. My suggestion is to come to Africa prepared. Don’t count on a lot of shopping options and bring a variety of things for heat, rain, and chilly nights.
DO: BRING CLOTHES THAT YOU ALREADY OWN
A mistake I made was going out and buying all new clothes before launch. I could have saved so much money if I would have brought clothes I already owned. If you have pieces that you wear a lot and enjoy, BRING THEM on the race. You’ll feel more comfortable feeling like you than anything else!

Same scarf. Different places. Jillian in South Africa. Laine and me in Romania.
