I had somebody email me asking a good question concerning vocal care, so I thought I’d post it for all to see. The question was relating to throat sprays and the like that you spray and presto chango it soothes the throat and helps you get through a singing or speaking engagement you otherwise would not have made it through.
I think these products definitely have their place. In a bind, something that soothes the throat and helps you get through a performance or concert or speach without it feeling like it’s killing your throat is a great thing. You never know when a sore throat or scratchy larynx is gonna pop up to ruin the day.
I would say that it would be wise not to use these things as a crutch. Sometimes sore and scratchy throats and hoarseness are signs of a larger vocal problem, and these products can delay the realization of a need for professional treatment.
Drinking plenty of fluids and giving your voice the proper rest it needs will work wonder for your voice, although they are not immediate fixes and sometimes you need an immediate fix. So use throat sprays on occasion if you need to and they work, but don’t rely on them totally and make sure to pay attention to your voices needs. Peace.
