There
is a place in the Philippines, in a 1.5 mile strip, where there are 15,000
girls trafficked in the sex trade.
As
soon as I heard those words, my heart stopped.
Denise: Hey Jamal, did you know that There is a place in the Philippines, in a 1.5 mile
strip, where there are 15,000 girls trafficked in the sex trade?
Me: Yeah Denise, I knew that.
Oh
no Jamal. Don’t say that. She can’t know that you knew. Take it back. Take the
words back. Go ahead, reach in front of you, grab ’em words and stick it back
in your mouth.
Nope.
Too late. She heard it. Brace yourself. Here comes the bomb. Ready, set… GO!
Denise: Yeah I
read about it on your blog. So what are you going to do about it?
Me: Huh?
Denise: I said what are you going to do about it?
Me: About what?
Denise: What you know! You said that you knew about a place in the Philippines, where in a 1.5 mile strip, there are 15,000 girls trafficked in the sex trade. So what are you gonna do about it?
*Note:
Denise is in high school here in San Jose, Costa Rica.*
I’m
constantly amazed at the wisdom in simplicity. In her mind, something as
complicated as human trafficking came down to this…
If
you know about it and you care, you should do something about it. Yes, it’s a
good thing ‘to know’ but unless that knowledge leads to doing, we have failed.
You
see, the problem with pointing out problems in the world is unless you do
something about it, you’re just making noise.
I
don’t know about you but I never want to be known as just an idea guy, or the
photographer guy, or the blog buy, or even that world racer guy.
I
want to be the doer. I want to play in the game. I want contact. I want in and
you should too.
Don’t
know where to start? How about with the things that bother you?
I’m
sure if I asked what was wrong with your family, your church, your
neighborhood, your city, your school or the world, you could type me a 1000
word paper.
Great.
You know what’s wrong with the world. Here’s my question for you. In the words
of my beautiful friend…
“So
what are you going to do about it?”
Are
you going to be a DO-er or just a SIT-er, LOOK-er, TALK-er, KNOW-er,
CRITICIZE-er or FAKE-er?
Don’t
get me wrong. Our identity as Christians is not doing. It’s BE-ing (in Jesus)
but the evidence of BE-ing in Jesus is DO-ing through Jesus.
We
can’t do everything but we can always do something.
We
have to always do something!
So, be honest, what are some things that bother you right now?
