Everyone has their quirks.
My friend Jacob is super passionate about computers. My friend Tim gets super-geeked about ANYTHING that deals with airplanes. Hugh loves the outdoors (and I’m starting to believe he doesn’t does home at night. He just goes to the woods and hangs out). My friend Jon is a horticulturalist…yeah…exactly…did you just google that?
*names have been changed to protect the parties involved*
but nevertheless….NERDS TO THE 10th degree!!
Most of the time, I don’t know what they’re talking about. And when I say “most of the time” I mean “none of the time.” It’s truly fascinating! I think it’s funny how confused I become when I am talking to them. But when I want to have a great conversation, these are the people that I seek out. They know a lot about their passion…and at the end of our conversation, I often feel like I want to do what they do and know what they know. That’s the power of the nerd – they’re inspiring. Matter of fact, the nerdier, the better.
These are the people that teach me.
I would rather hang out with a nerd than someone who is just trying to fit in. Someone who just wants to be “normal.”
I admit it…I’m a huge nerd too. The music I listen to, my “fashion”, photography, enthusiasm for health policy, and my passion for cross-fit training are a few of my many obsessions (four truths and one not-so truth).
I’ve chosen to pursue the
World Race because of my passions. I believe you, on the other hand, are channeling your nerdiness to make a difference.
We need you to be you – your unique experience, your unique voice, your unique passions, your unique perspective – all set on making a difference.
Right now, I’m asking you to be a nerd. Embrace the inner nerd!
How? This is what I need you to do:
1) What do you love?
What makes you excited? What gets you going? What can you talk about for an hour without stopping? What are you passionate about? It’s unmistakable that I have a passion for the Bible. I just didn’t know how to explain the stories of the Bible until I started going thru some things. Then I recognized that a lot of people were going thru the same things and that made me want to share more.
What do you love? Identify it…now.
2) Use It To Do Something.
Why are you the only person that knows about your passions? Why not share them with other people? I mean…”what’s the point of being able to talk if you have to keep secrets?” (c/o Donkey from Shrek advising Princess Fiona to tell Shrek that she’s an ogre…*nerd moment*).
God calls us to do so many things. Are you answering your calling and using your passions? Are you using it to make a difference?
3) Never Stop Learning.
Life ends when you stop learning – when you stop being curious. Every day is a new day. Recognize that EVERY moment – the struggles, the confusion, the success – is an opportunity to learn.
BE CURIOUS!
Most people spend too much time trying NOT to be nerdy. STOP IT! NERDS OF THE WORLD UNITE!!!
What makes you a nerd and how are you using that to make a difference?
