For those of you who are unaware, I went to Thailand for 3 months in 2012. Towards the end of my trip I got a pretty bad stomach virus right before I was heading to Chiang Mai for a few days to go on a jungle trek. Not only was I sick all night before I left, but I was sick all day before my bus left that evening. I’ll spare you all the details, just know it wasn’t pretty. I had a fever while on the overnight bus. It was rough. I then proceeded to go on a 2 day, 1 night jungle trek with 6 people who I didn’t know who didn’t all speak English. While I was dehydrated. And sick.

It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. And one of the stupidest. And one of the greatest. I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything, but I would also never do it again..

All this to say, once you go through something like that it really puts perspective on everything else. Tonight as I became sick with a stomach virus, instead of complaining and crying and wishing for my mommy, I started thanking God.

Thank you God for a toilet.
Thank you God for toilet paper.
Thank you God for wet wash rags.
Thank you God for air conditioning.
Thank you God for a clean bathroom floor.
Thank you God for medicine that’s written in English.
Thank you God for sweat pants.
The list goes on…

In the past if I would have been sick I would have thrown a fit, wished for death, layed on the floor and started saying my goodbyes. Tonight it was different and while I’m typing this, lying in bed with a wet washrag on my forhead and a sharp pain in my stomach, I am thankful that God has given me this new perspective.
