This month my team was assigned unsung Heroes ministry in south Honduras.
Unsung Heroes is where you Pray/seek The Lord and look for new ministries.
I am writing to tell you about one of the ministries we found this month in Choluteca Honduras.
In 1998 hurricane Mitch devastated Honduras, yet in the aftermath, many churches helped in the rebuilding effort.
Iglecia Gran Comision Choluteca is one of those churches. The church’s mission is to share Gospel with the community while serving. (Matthew 28:18-20)
Though the Choluteca down town appears to have modern buildings/mall/ fast food as you drive 20 min away from the city center you arrive in poor areas where families are living in houses made of plastic/wood with tin roofs.
We visited Maria and Recardo’s family house in Breezes Del Rio
The church partnered with a short term missions team to build a rescue home for them. (They used to live in a plastic /wood/ tin shack)
The rescue home is a better structure and took one week to build and cost about 2,500 USD. Yet this project is just the one of many projects the church has to share the Gospel in a practical way.
The church has three main ministry sites.
1- Choluteca church / school
This location is were the church meets on Saturdays at 5pm and 7pm.
About 550 people attend both services in Spanish, they also have a translator to hear the message in English.
The church also runs a day care at this site.
2- Limon development center
There are three main ministries at this location:
-A nutrition center where kids are fed two meals a day.
Pastor Geovani before becoming full time pastor was also a medical doctor. While visiting poorer areas he has helped diagnose children’s sicknesses and in some cases this has saved lives. They also have a child sponsorship program where for 45 dollars a month you can sponsor a child.
-A school where children/ adults can learn about English and computers.
-A tortilla machine where they employ part time people from the community. The machine can make up to 2000 tortillas per hour.
3- Jacaloto
There are five main ministries at this location:
-Casa Hogar Vida where the church started to build cinder block homes for families in need. They encourage the families to work and provide the opportunity for the family to own the homes. The church also has bible study groups in this community where people are welcome to join.
Currently there are 40 houses built with land for another 60 it takes about one month to built these homes they have plumbing and electricity. The houses cost just shy of 8000 USD to build each it was a sobering thought to think of the cost of one house where i live is enough to fund all the ones I saw.
– An orphanage that takes care of children that have been affected by AIDS.
– A Cinder block machine that makes 500 blocks per day.
-A hand craft shop
In Honduras people that have AIDS have a stigma tied to them that makes it difficult to find work or housing.
-A missions house is also at this site that can house 32 plus missionaries from short term missions trips. It has clean water and has housed missions teams from the USA. If your interested in learning more about this ministry please check out the link below:
