Kibera is one of the biggest slums in Kenya. The poverty is unbelievable. We could see in the distance houses upon houses. These houses aren’t like the ones we see in America. The houses were made out of mud, coal, and rusted sheet metal. Some houses are only the size of a small room. The slum can sometimes be dangerous so we went with 2 escorts.

As we got closer, we could smell the stench of trash and stagnant water. We walked down a slipper muddy path to reach the street. The street was filled with many people going about their day.

We didn’t go there to pity them or look down on them. We didn’t go to judge or give hand outs. We went to love on them and pray with them. We went to show them Jesus. We aren’t any better than they are because we have more money. God sees them as His children and they deserve to be reached. We ALL are the body of Christ.

We ask God if you’re a good God why are there starving children in the world? God asks us that same question back! We are blessed to bless others. We are His physical hands and feet! Maybe we’re not all called to overseas missions, but you are called to do something.

The longer I’m here the more I realize how faithful the people are. It’s easy to trust God to provide for you when you have a job, but many of these people don’t know where their next meal will come from now that is faith! Faith that God will provide their daily bread for one more day. They have faith that they will one day have a nicer house, that they can go to school, that they will have a better job.

It makes me more thankful for what I do have. I’m so blessed and so ungrateful for what I have. Thank you God that I have an education, a great family, a car, a phone, a computer, a tv, etc. When I was in America, sometimes I didn’t like going to work. I complained and said I wasn’t making enough. I couldn’t go shopping and I couldn’t go out to eat…how selfish am I!

There are people in the world who are starving and I’m worried about a new pair of shoes. I’m not saying it’s bad to shop or have nice things, but we should be grateful for them and not complain. So I encourage you next time you complain think of all the things you can be thankful for and praise God for them!

What are you thankful for that you take for granted?
