On our night outreach we also went to a “disco club”. Again, we were welcomed into a small side room with the women where we talked for a while. I was able to speak to two girls who were in their 30s and have kids. They were both trying to get their passports and paperwork settled in order to leave the Philippines and be domestic workers in other countries. One woman, “Jenni” will leave in a matter of weeks to head to Dubai. I celebrated the news with her, but when I asked if she is excited she said she will have to leave her 7 kids behind and is afraid she will be lonely. Wow, I’m speechless. The other women, “Amy” is trying to go to Egypt to also become a domestic worker. She wants to be able to send her 14 year old daughter to college. This is the tradeoff to get out of the entertainment business and still provide.
Finally, we went to a karaoke bar formerly managed by one of our guides. Marita remarked when we arrived that there were no girls in the bar–no girls for sale she meant. This was refreshing and a
sign of some
of the lives that have already been changed. Our night outreach wrapped up with joyful laughs as we sang karaoke songs. The final song before we left was “Jesus Is Lord” (yes, it was on the karaoke list) sung by our friend, the bar’s former manager. It was a powerful testimony of how Jesus transforms lives. It was so significant because this woman who had been so instrumental in perpetuating the sale of women in her club was now in the same place singing about the one who changed everything.
