It’s interesting when things go differently than planned.  My family and I had that experience this year.  We were headed to west Texas for Christmas Eve service with family when we ran right into a blizzard.  It seems like that would be hard to do, but not really.  My dad really watches the weather and apparently they didn’t even see this coming.  So, we ended up driving into a blizzard and getting delayed…..for 22 hours.  We actually slept in our car which was an adventure for my family that only camps in hotels.  Check out these pics…

You might be wondering how this kind of thing happens.  It’s simple…1. it snows a lot  2. a semi slides across the whole road blocking traffic  3. the blizzard conditions prevent everyone from going around (the people who try and get stuck further incentivize you not to try), and consequently you are crammed on the road like sardines for 22 hours.  That’s how it works.  Then, when the 18 wheeler gets cleaned up you still can’t move because there are 50-60 abandoned cars on the road (or halfway on the road) in front of you that must be moved before you can proceed.  This was our story.  Check out more pics of abandoned cars…

It was probably a big inconvenient gift from God that we got stuck because I was able to spend a long time with my immediate family before leaving for 11 months.  I’m sure they would have rather done it at the nice warm hotel we passed in Wichita Falls that my Mom suggested we stop at 15 minutes before the traffic stopped.  Live and learn…and always listen to your Mom!

The blizzard did stop and the road did clear up and we were able to eat Christmas lunch at Denny’s with a lot of other people thankful to be off the road.

So, this is how we spent Christmas Eve and Christmas day…not as planned, but honestly still very lucky and blessed.  We were warm.  We had food and water.  We had loving family close by (very close).  We have hope of a better day tomorrow.  So many people in the world don’t even have these simple provisions that we had while stranded on the highway.  It’s easy to complain about any situation, but it’s easier to find someone in a worse situation if you look.  Be blessed and count those blessings friends!

Grace to you,
Holly
