On Wednesday nights, we do worship at Beacon of Hope.

Beacon of Hope is a home for teenage boys who are either orphaned, come from a bad home, or whose parents couldn’t take care of them. We have the honor and privilege to work at this ministry and to minister to these boys this month.

Last Wednesday, we sat down with the boys in the outdoor kitchen and alternated songs. We did one in English, then they would do one in Portuguese, and so on. It was phenomenal. These boys worshipped with everything they had. They worshipped with their voices and a jug that they used as a drum.

Holy Spirit’s presence was so evident.

This would be enough for a blog post in itself.

A few really cool things happened for us though. I played a song that I wrote for them, and they joined us in worshipping the Lord through it.

They started singing “Here I am to Worship” in Portuguese, and something happened to me. I’ve heard this song so many times, but I’ve never played it on the guitar. All of the sudden, I could pick out the chords in the songs they were singing, starting with that one.

I was playing along to songs I have never heard.

The next night, we were having team time, and two of the boys knocked on the kitchen door and asked us to come worship with them again. The same things happened.

Each night as we finished, we would all stay around and hang out with the boys.

Three things happened:

1. The boys started being themselves around us.

2. We started calling each other by name.

3. I stepped out of my comfort zone with music.

This goes to show how God knows no language barrier. The Holy Spirit is greater than any difference. Worship is beautiful in its simplicity.

It’s coming to the Father as you are with what you have. It’s about your life, not just with music. But that night, we came to our King with songs of praise.

So, come as you are to the Lord.
Bring what you have.
And delight in His presence with the people around you.
It’s going to be great.

Psalm 150

Praise the Lord!
Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty expanse.
Praise Him for His mighty deeds;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness.
Praise Him with trumpet and sound;
Praise Him with timbrel and dancing;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and pipe.
Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with resounding cymbals.
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord!
