There
is a little known secret hidden in the most unexpected place in Siem Reap,
Cambodia. A group of Thai, Korean and Vietnamese refugees came to Cambodia
in their distress, but were unfortunately not granted asylum or land. They all were in desperate need and
could not return home, though.
With creative brilliance these refugees realized they could not acquire
land, but there is an enormous lake to be taken advantage of. They decided to live there.
Since
then, an entire community has been established in the middle of the lake. There are floating schools, restaurants,
basketball courts, homes, gardens and churches. Those who have knowledge of this place refer to it as “the
floating village.” Our teammates
who spent a month in Siem Reap, though, had no idea of its existence, nor do
many of the city’s residents.
I
was given the distinct privilege, along with friends Natalie and Benny, to
visit this floating village, and it stands as one of the greatest experiences I
have ever had in my life. I cannot
really explain how amazing it was, but hopefully the following images will give
you a taste.

all Benny said was, “who’s going first?” …and then I had a giant snake on my neck.
