“Who’s Hollis Johnson?” said Rocheanne, in a South African accent looking over the top of his paper with all of our names on it.

I raised my hand tentatively expecting him to make fun of my name, and I was not disappointed.

“Ah that is a boy’s name, Mr. Johnson,” Rocheanne quipped. From that point on I have responded to Mr. Johnson and many other nicknames Rocheanne has given me. Working at the Light House has not been what I expected at all, and Rocheanne has probably been one of the biggest surprises.

Rocheanne is our contact here in Dublin and we work with him all day every day. He is always joking around with us, yet underneath all of the teasing is a very generous heart. Although he has not been working with Dublin Christian Missions for long, he has such a sincere passion for the homeless and anyone in need. He may not admit it, but he has taken great care of us here and has shown me that ministry can be done in a variety of ways. Everyday Rocheanne gives us a new task to do at the Light House which usually consists of cleaning, sorting through clothing, and more cleaning. We don’t get to interact too much with the homeless, but Rocheanne assures us that everything we are doing is making a difference. Most of our days are spent in “the dungeons” where the clothing and other items are stored, but on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings there is a worship service and food/clothing distribution for those in need.

Little did we know that we would be leading these weekly services, yet with a lot of prayer and trust in God we have managed to do just fine. We all used to joke about how we have no musical talent on our team and what we would do when we had to lead worship, and now its just something we accept we have to do. Madeline said Andrea and I are going to become the worship leaders on the team…those that know me are probably laughing right now, but who knows? Maybe God will bless both Andrea and me with incredible voices! Until then, we will work with what we’ve got because all God asks for is that we try our best.
