Abandonment.

Each month, Adventures in Missions asks us to reevaluate what we are abandoning or questions what we need to consider abandoning. To which I respond, bitterly, “I am abandoning pretty much everything this year…does that not count as enough?”

Even though I have abandoned the comforts of America, material possessions, and numerous relationships, I am actually reminded of what else I need to abandon on a daily basis.

My time.

My time on the race is not my own and I guess I pretty much signed up for that.

I signed up to live in community 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

I signed up to be told what to do by a ministry host, Adventures in Missions, and sometimes my team leader or treasurer.

I signed up to live in other countries where things never seem to go as expected.

I signed up to consistently be a team player, selfless, patient, and interruptible.

I signed up to be someone that is joy, not a burden. Helpful, not unwilling.

I signed up to leave people and places better then I found it.

And because of all of this, I typically need a little help from Jesus.

He gives me loads of patience and gushes of energy and positivity and it’s a game changer.

So, here’s to Jesus and making me less miserable in pretty miserable moments, like grocery shopping with 6 people in order to feed 12 people for the next 7 days.

And here’s to adopting this mindset when I go home where time will be more my own. I pray I am more sacrificial and more interruptible and more joyful then before.

Cheers.
