One thing that being on the race has taught me is to have no expectations. Being in India, we never know what is going to happen next. 2 house visits turn into 5 and next thing we know, our free afternoon is no longer free. Our time is no longer ours and well we have to give it up.
Coming into this country, our first train ride was about 6 hours. As we boarded the train, I had really low expectations. I was expecting tons of crowding and chickens flying everywhere. I expected no personal space and all kinds of smells. When we got on, I was completely surprised. We were the only ones in the car, with tons of leg room. We were able to stretch out and sleep. We were served breakfast and black coffee. The smell was not bad and we had a choice of western style toilet or a squatty potty. My heart leaped for joy.
This past weekend, Alex, Ben and I had to visit a different city and preach at a church on Sunday morning. We left at 8 on Saturday morning, planning on a 5 hour train ride. We had a friend with us, who did not speak good English. We were really excited because of our previous experience of train rides in India. We boarded the train and were completely disappointed. There were no seats for us to sit on and no bathrooms for us to use. We had tons of people staring at us and well, the smell…not so good. I learned then and there not to have any expectations.
