Two years ago, I visited the country of Haiti for the first time, and the beautiful mess that it is captured my heart in ways and for reasons that I will never forget. In a land rooted in satanic worship, witchcraft, and voodoo, my eyes were opened for the first time to the reality of the spiritual realm. I experienced the ever-conquering victory of Jesus Christ that effortlessly trumps the powers of darkness. I clung tightly to the Promise of God that “The light shines in the darkness and the darkness can never extinguish it.” (John 1:5)
During dinner on the first night of that visit, our team was graced with the awe-inspiring sound of Haitian believers worshiping in a nearby church. The song that echoed so loudly and beautifully from that cement building is still very precious to me. Their worship penetrated the language barrier and my heart joined them in praise. For the rest of my time there, whenever darkness or fear began to creep its way back into my mind and thoughts, I would sing that song and The Light would prevail.
In two years I still have not forgotten the power of that song, the peace it brought to my heart, or the body of believers it represents here in Haiti. It is very common to sing a song together when you visit the home of a Haitian, and every time I have, I’ve asked that they sing this one along with me.
