God is Waking Me Up and I didn’t Know I was Asleep
just in the sense of strength and beauty, but in terms of capacity and power. He keeps showing up and blowing my preconceived ideas over like a sandcastle on the seashore. As a ‘thinker,’ I cannot seem to stop thinking about God and His capacity as not just my ‘friend,’ but as my ‘savior.’ I also cannot help but think that I used to see Him in a different light in the States than I do now as I travel and minister throughout the world.
Which confirms what some of AIM’s staff noted at training camp in October. Comments were made about how limited the “American God” has become. Christians go to
church, read their Bibles, attend small groups, and send their children to VBS
in the summers, yet they do not tend to think about or believe in miracles,
tongues, and prophesies, except for when it comes to stories of Moses in the
Old Testament and Jesus and His disciples and apostles of the New Testament.
I certainly fall into this category. Or should I say,
‘fell’? I am at a quandary here in Siem
Reap. I grew up in a wonderful and conservative Presbyterian church in Naperville and am currently a member of The Village
Chapel, a non-denominational church in Nashville.
Both churches neither condemn nor encourage the charismatic traits that AIM
encourages. To say I am being stretched would be accurate. Which is good-I am
beginning to think about my faith and religion in a different light. In fact, God
is waking me up and I didn’t even know I was asleep in this area.
To be honest, a lot of this is still at the rhetoric stage
for me. I am still thinking about what I believe without any definitive answers
about the charismatic side of Christianity.
So, this is to be continued…
