On some days, I desire to live simply and walk with the Lord.

But on others, I want to purchase a Porsche© Carrera GT and live my
life in style with this carbon fiber monocoque and V10 engine.

Since when does it matter what kind of vehicle I drive? Since when
does my personal appearance make any difference to God?

I would be a liar if I said I didn’t struggle with materialism. There are days
that I desire to be a minimalist and own only the bare essentials. I want to
live without the additional burdens that only come from wanting more
‘wants’ and not being satisfied with the fulfilled ‘needs’ in my life.  Yet,
it is so easy for to get caught up in wanting a bigger apartment, a nicer car,
more work projects, an iPhone©, and more time. But really, when it comes
down to it, everything that I am striving for takes away from the time that I
have to invest in the people around me.

But what really matters?  The Christian-ese answer is Jesus and while I
can often be found rolling my eyes at such a response–Jesus and His
life’s example is what matters. He didn’t go around parading in a chariot.
He didn’t go around eating at the best places and with the wealthiest families.
He simply walked or rode on a humble donkey. He ate with the outcasts,
underdogs, and prostitutes. He loved and His Father provided. He shared
and He was blessed.

What really matters is no longer a question in my life, but a
challenge to be more like Christ in all that I do and in all of my desires.
