A lot of times when we do outreach we don’t see a response. So last week when my team and I went to tell kids in the slums about the VBS we are hosting, I didn’t really expect to see anything come of it.
There were four of us who went to one location, my teammate Elijah, and then two girls from the team we love with, Janie and Ellen. (that was an auto correct mistake, I meant to say live with, but I’m leaving it as love with, as I think that is almost more appropriate) Our Filipino contacts brought us into a house and gathered up about fifteen of the local kids. Eli shared the story of (BBC) and Ellen lead us in songs. Then we enjoyed a meal of spaghetti and hotdogs Filipino style with the kids before taking a walk around the area passing out as many pre-registration forms as we could find kids. One of the girls, Rafaela, led us around and did such an amazing job. And as fun as it was, I kind of didn’t expect to see those kiddos again. I know that’s a pretty pessimistic outlook, but it’s quite often the reality for us. So when four of them showed up to church the next morning, and five to our VBS this morning, I was so very presently surprised. And I feel guilty for that surprise, because who am I to doubt that god is going to do that which he wants to accomplish? And who am I to doubt that we are the vessels he wants to use?
I’m so excited for this week of VBS. Quite honestly, children’s ministry isn’t my forte. Four months straight of teaching kind of got me my fix. 😉 But this week we have almost 150 kids and even some of their parents hearing about the love of God every single morning. And every single piece of this week has been carefully prepared and prayed over. I wholeheartedly believe that this week God is going to plant seeds that mature into a harvest that change this town, this island, and this nation. Keep this in your prayers!
