I still love what I am doing. But, I’ll be honest, this month I have been missing things from back home a little more and I have moments where I question what I am doing. It just comes with being gone from home for an extended period of time.
Here are some things I’m missing:
-Air conditioning
-The four seasons: I know this one sounds weird, but I left the US in winter and since then have experienced pretty much four months of summer and will have at least four more months of it. Which is great for some reasons, but it is also really hot and I miss the seasons. I miss spring and what that feels like and the green and I miss winter in some ways (i.e. not sweating to death).
-I miss dressing up–even if I didn’t do it a lot back home, I miss my nice dresses, pencil skirt, tank-tops, sandals and boots and scarves. And my joggers.
-I miss not being able to watch more Big Bang Theory and White Collar (I left without starting season 3 of White Collar and I am missing the current season of Big Bang I believe).
-Food! Oh man, I missed mashed potatoes, grilled cheese sandwiches, and my dad’s burgers (although thankfully the Lord has been good and I have had some really good burgers in some of the countries here).
-I miss having an occasional adult beverage with my parents.
-I miss movie nights with my parents.
-I miss my camp family–who are also one of my church familys and my other friends back in the states.
-I miss driving in my dad’s truck to work.
-My own, little CONSTANT corner to just be. I’m often sharing a room with 1-7 people and each month we pack up and go to a different place. Having my own little haven is nice.
What I have been doing about it:
-Enjoying the fresh fruit that is in Asia like mango.
-Living simply and trying to make myself feel cute with an occasional new purschase of a new dress or putting on mascara.
-Our host this month has cooked us some AWESOME food this month which has helped.
-I’m watching the second season of white collar…again.
-I have movie nights with my team.
-Trying to enjoy the summer since winter can be so harsh.
-I’m building relationships in my squad of 50 and also making new friends in each country I go to.
-Home is where my mattress pad is. Once I have it set up and my day-pack filled of things from home from Bible to pictures of home to Oggie, I’m good.
