World Race Famous. Is that what this is really about?
We all do it. We all post “creative” or “artsy” pictures on facebook/instagram/twitter in the hopes of someone from the AIM office seeing it and re-posting it. I can honestly admit to seeing an old woman in the street and contemplated taking her picture to post on Facebook to get more supporters or to get re-posted by AIM, sorry, I’m human. Now, don’t get me wrong, intentions can be good too. Wanting to give a local ministry the recognition they deserve is a noble goal. Wanting to post a picture of a child who has a need, give him supporters, and facilitate getting him that need, again, noble goal. But….
I had a thought. “If I never posted another picture to social media, would the world still know me? Would they remember my love, my heart and my laugh? Or is the world I live in that far gone that it truly is about the recognition and re-post?”……
I don’t buy it. I think just as “far gone” as the world might seem to be, I think there is just as much good in it as well. People have just been led astray. Led down a path they don’t recognize. They are trying to perform, to be good enough. I have been traveling the world for some time now, being exposed to the injustices of the world. I have been exposed to how bad it can truly get. The amazing thing is, love still conquers all. My memories from the past months have been seeing the abundant love in Central America and in Southeast Asia, not the hardships. What I have learned during my years of travel is how to love others better. I have learned how to be loved.
I don’t think the answer is to stop posting to any of these amazing sites. They offer pictures and videos to our loved ones back home and comfort when they miss us the most. I do, however, think we all need to take just a moment and step back. Evaluate the heart behind your posts. We should use these mediums as a way to spread love across oceans, not to exploit. We should connect with loved ones back home and continue relationships with our communities. Let us all use these sites to love one another, not to become World Race famous.
