I have been preparing for the race for a short while now. I have been making sure all debts are paid off, student loans are going into deferment, mother has power of attorney, my fundraising is on track, I have the correct gear and the list goes on and on and on…. Once again I feel like I am missing the point. (I feel like this happens to me a lot lately). I came across something today that changed my outlook and plan for the race as well as my life. It read, “Preach the Gospel at all times, and when necessary use words.” These words written by Francis of Assisi changed something for me.

How true! Actions speak not only to me but the world so much louder than words. When out in the field there will be times when words fail because of language barriers, but do these people just get left out of hearing the good news? I think not. We speak, and get closer to the Lord, and inspire others not by our words alone, but with the actions that accompany them. Our heart behind our actions is what speaks. Our heart behind our actions is what makes us who we are in Christ.

Maybe instead of focusing on the millions (literally millions) of small details surrounding the race, I should focus on my actions. I need to adjust my actions towards others, towards worship and towards the Lord. Maybe to better prepare myself for the race I don’t need to adjust the details, I need to adjust my heart. Maybe I’m not making sense I suppose but let me try this another way… I have two choices: 1. I meticulously arrange the details and show up to the race expecting it to open me and bring me closer to the Lord…. or 2. I can open my heart and change my actions now and show up to the race already closer to the Lord and open to the experiences he has prepared for me.

I choose the second.

I would also like to end with a little tidbit of an insiders look at who I’m going on the race with…..

Me: “what’s your favorite place to grab a bite?”

Team Member: “the dentist….”      It should be an amazing year!! hahahahahahahaha!
