Today after construction, I volunteered to take our contact’s three year old daughter outside to give mom some time to work. The chill in the air has begun to deepen as the days edge us ever closer to Winter. So Abbie and I suited up: she in her little jacket and frog boots and I in her dinosaur beanie.
Then we were off to rule the playground and ensuing territory.
She has a favorite game on the trampoline. She shouts “run run run run!” and you run around in circles. Then she says “NIGHT TIME!” at which point you fall dead where you are. Five seconds later comes, “It’s morning!”. And then it begins again, the running, sleeping, and waking up. It seems so silly. So futile.
But as I was playing along (a little to easily entertained) I thought, “This is a lot like what grown-ups do, too.” We run ourselves around in circles.
We’re on the worship team, we go to church, we run the small group, we’re on the committees at work, we go to the gym. Then we hit the deck for bed time and wake up just to start the madness all over.
We’re so busy, but are we getting anywhere?
None of these things are inherently bad. But trading our freedom in Christ for the chains of busyness…that’s a very bad thing.
So I challenge you today, take a moment to stop and look around at your life. Does it resemble this toddler trampoline game? If so, take some time to know why you’re doing what you’re doing. CHOOSE. Do what you do because it brings glory to God and joy to your heart. Spend some quiet time away with the Lord. Take time to enjoy the people in your life. Don’t get so caught up in completing the cycle that you miss the scenery along the way.
