I’ll be writing journal entries about each day so I can keep track through the months, and this is one I thought I’d share from our day of travel and arrival in Guatemala! It’s simple, but enjoy!

10:30pm

It’s raining with a beautiful gentleness outside the cozy confines of my tent. I’ve been up since 3:30am, and I can’t tell you how sweet it is to know I’ll get to dream soon, and for more than just an hour or two at a time.

This morning we took early morning naps at the Atlanta airport, got our last Starbucks/Panda Express/Chick-Fil-A, and jumped on a non-stop flight to Guatemala City, complete with complimentary movies like Divergent and The Amazing Spiderman.

All in all, travel today was as easy as we could have dreamed. Nice busses with AC for the 5 hour bus ride from Guatemala City to Santa Cruz del Quiche, plenty of sitting room with separate compartments for our packs. We drove through the incredible Guatemalan Highlands, saw a few really awesome rainbows while contemplating a search for the leprechaun at the other side, and thought we’d meet death several times on the windy, steep, narrow turns of the mountains.

We drove through small towns, all the locals staring at our “gringo” caravan, waving, and generally going about their Guatemalan business (like making tortillas, sitting on the curb, walking kids home from school etc). There were street dogs everywhere, kids playing in the most random of places, and motorcyclists whizzing past our bus to safety in just the knick of time.

Then, we were unloading bags and huddling up in the small corporate room at Agape in Action’s headquarters, listening to Irv and Sally talk about their love for this country, the do’s and don’ts of staying here, and how much they love the Lord.

A sweet indigenous woman who works for them and goes by the name of Martha had prepared soup and salad for us, and we ate until our stomachs were content. We took warm showers, we squeezed all of our tents into one tiny square space of land, and now I’ll be going to bed at 10pm and not waking up til 7am.

We are here, and God is good.

Goodnight, Guatemala.
