“Azungu! Azungu!” This word means white person. I probably hear that word at least 50 times a day. Sometimes the kids will be super close to us and then other times we will hear it faintly in the distance and look and see the kids are up on a mountain. With these kids yelling at us comes a bunch of waves and handshakes and greetings. There have been a few kids who when they see us their mouths will just drop open because they have never seen a white person before. Sometimes I feel like I’m someone famous walking down these streets. However, the only reason this is happening is because I’m white. Even at the bank instead of making us wait in line they have us just go straight to the front of the line. I want to sometimes just say “We aren’t that special.”
On the first day of ministry we attracted a bunch of kids because we are not African. Actually we attracted kids everyday because of this. However, on the first day we were asked to explain to someone how we get so many kids to come because he wants to learn our tricks. We didn’t know what to tell him. They come because they see a bunch of azungus but they stay because we dance, play games, and sing songs with them. We just relate.
My first week in Malawi has consisted of not only doing all these things with hundreds of kids but also sharing the Gospel with them! I have told the story of The Fall as well as the story of The Lost Son to different groups of kids. Each day we have seen over 20 kids get saved! This isn’t because of anything we are doing or because we look different, but it is because of how God is moving and what He is doing in the lives of the people here in Malawi! They are hungry for something more! When they are hearingThe Truth they are latching on to it!
To be honest it’s annoying to be called out all the time because of my skin color. However, if it gets kids interested in what a group of Americans are doing in small villages and they come and hang out with us and hear The Gospel then it is totally worth it in my opinion!
We have seen over 60 kids get saved this week and I can’t wait to see what God does in the next three weeks here in Malawi!
Financial update: I am still $5,127 away from being fully funded by January 1. I just asked that you prayerfully consider supporting me financially so that I may stay on the field all 11 months.
